Your Syllabus Is Not Ready for AI: Here Is Where to Start

If you teach at a university today, there is a good chance your syllabus falls into one of two categories when it comes to artificial intelligence. It either contains a brief statement prohibiting AI use, or it says nothing about AI at all.

Neither approach adequately prepares students for the world they are entering.

This is not a criticism of faculty. Most educators are acutely aware of AI’s growing presence in higher education. We see students using Generative AI tools. We hear conversations about academic integrity, authenticity, and assessment. We attend workshops, read policy updates, and discuss emerging challenges with colleagues.

The issue is not awareness. The issue is that awareness has not yet translated into intentional pedagogical design.

If you review syllabi across professional courses, you will notice a troubling pattern: many communicate rules without offering guidance, restrictions without reflection, and policies without pedagogy.

The question is no longer whether AI belongs in higher education. It already does. However, the most important question is whether our courses are helping students think critically about the technologies they are increasingly using.

The Gap We Are Not Talking About

Higher education is currently navigating an institutional lag. Technological adoption is moving faster than curricular adaptation.

Faculty are being asked to make decisions about AI before many disciplines have established best practices. Students are encountering AI across their academic and professional lives, yet many courses still treat it as a peripheral concern rather than a central dimension of contemporary communication, research, and knowledge production.

This creates a gap between the realities students face and the guidance institutions provide. Most educators feel this gap. What many lack is not motivation but a practical framework for responding to it, one that moves beyond reactive policy toward intentional design.

Critical digital pedagogy offers one such framework. Rather than asking only what students can or cannot do with AI, it encourages educators to ask a different set of questions:

  • How do students understand these technologies?
  • How do these tools shape communication, learning, and decision-making?
  • What forms of judgment, ethics, and critical thinking should accompany their use?

These questions belong in our syllabi because they belong in our classrooms.

Three Common Gaps in Current Syllabi

  • The Policy Without the Pedagogy: Many syllabi now include an AI policy often borrowed from institutional templates or adapted from colleagues. While policies are necessary, they rarely explain why the policy exists. Students may understand the rule but not the reasoning behind it. As a result, AI becomes framed primarily as a compliance issue rather than a learning opportunity.

A policy tells students what to do. Pedagogy helps them understand why. When AI appears only as a restriction, we miss the opportunity to build the critical digital literacy our students actually need.

  • The Missing Ethical Framework: Many students are told what they cannot do their works with AI. Few are taught how to evaluate what they should do. Ethical AI use involves more than avoiding misconduct. It requires thoughtful decision-making about transparency, authorship, accuracy, bias, accountability, and professional responsibility.

These are not technical skills; they are communication skills. Without an ethical framework, students may follow rules without developing the judgment necessary to navigate increasingly complex digital environments.

  • The Absence of Voice and Agency: Perhaps the most overlooked gap is student agency. When AI policies focus exclusively on compliance, students become passive rule-followers rather than active decision-makers. Critical digital citizenship requires more than obedience. It requires the ability to make informed, reflective choices about when, why, and how technologies should be used.

If our goal as educators is to prepare students for professional environments where AI is increasingly present, then agency must become part of the conversation, not an afterthought.

Where to Start: Three Practical Moves

Addressing these gaps does not require redesigning an entire course. Small, intentional changes can have meaningful impact.

  • Replace an AI Policy Statement with an AI Learning Objective:  Consider moving beyond statements such as “AI use is prohibited in this course.” Instead, incorporate a learning objective that invites critical engagement:

“By the end of this course, students will be able to evaluate the ethical, rhetorical, and professional implications of AI-assisted communication.”

This shifts AI from a compliance issue to a learning outcome. Students are not simply being told what to avoid, they are being invited to develop informed judgment.

  • Add One AI-Critical Assignment: Start with a single assignment. Ask students to compare an AI-generated response with a human-generated response and reflect on differences in credibility, tone, ethics, or audience adaptation. Alternatively, students might conduct an AI audit of a communication campaign, analyze AI-generated media content, or write a reflective piece on the role of AI in their discipline.

The goal is not to teach AI for its own sake. The goal is to cultivate critical digital literacy within the context of your existing course.

  • Create a Transparent AI Dialogue: Students benefit when instructors openly discuss their own perspectives on AI not to impose a particular viewpoint, but to model reflective practice. Explain why you have chosen your course policies. Discuss the opportunities and concerns you see. Invite questions and acknowledge uncertainty where it exists.

Transparency builds trust. It also demonstrates the kind of critical engagement we hope students will develop themselves.

Looking Forward

There is no perfect syllabus for the AI era. The technologies will continue to evolve, institutional policies will change, and new challenges will emerge.

The goal is not a syllabus that permanently resolves the AI question. The goal is a syllabus that remains honestly responsive to it, one that treats AI not as a threat to be managed but as a reality to be engaged thoughtfully.

Higher education has always adapted to new forms of communication and new ways of producing knowledge. AI is another moment of transformation. But it is also an invitation to rethink how we prepare students for participation in increasingly digital and algorithmically mediated environments.
